The City of Newton commissioned a retail analysis of the Newton trade area from the Buxton Company in 2014. In general, the study results serve as a guide to understanding retail opportunities in Newton. In particular, the study identifies unmet retail demand, possible opportunities for expansion, and the gap between actual and potential retail sales.
A key finding of the study—Newton residents spend significantly more for products than local businesses capture, which is known as retail leakage. This suggests unmet demand in the trade area and the ability of the community to support additional retail space for certain types of businesses.
