Main Street’s goal is economic development within the context of historic preservation. The style and character of historic buildings create a unique place to shop and do business, and consistently attract visitors from out of town. Such an environment gives business owners a comparative advantage over businesses located in shopping malls and strip malls.
Newton Main Street and the City of Newton worked with consulting architecture firm Bergland & Cram to create voluntary design guidelines for Newton Main Street District buildings. The guidelines highlight principles of historic preservation and preservation strategies to meet the needs of Newton Main Street District buildings. The guidelines are voluntary and intended to serve as a resource for District building owners, especially those seeking tax credit and other grant funding.
